One of my photographs, taken during the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, has been nominated as a finalist in the '1839 Awards', an international photography competition held in the United States. The year '1839' marks a significant milestone in the history of photography. On 19 August 1839, the 'Daguerreotype', the world's first practical photographic process was unveiled in Paris, and this event inspired the name of the award. I will never forget the image of that elderly woman who lost her life in the refugee camp. And I am committed to continuing to share the stories of Cambodian citizens who yearn for peace and democracy.

タイとカンボジアの国境紛争を取材した際の一枚の写真がアメリカの国際写真賞『1839 AWARDS』のファイナリストに選ばれました。1839年は写真界にとっての記念すべき年で、世界初の実用的な写真技法『ダゲレオタイプ』がパリで発表されました。写真賞の名前の由来となっています。国境紛争に巻き込まれ、難民キャンプに避難せざるを得なかったご高齢のメアス・スーンさんは過酷な避難生活で体調を崩し、難民キャンプの診療所で治療を受けていました。しかし急激に体調が悪化し、医師は懸命な処置を施しましたがスーンさんは命を落としました。ポル・ポト政権の虐殺と内戦を生き延びたスーンさんが再び戦火に巻き込まれ命を落とす現実は、戦争の不条理を突き付けられた時間でした。彼女の姿を決して忘れず、カンボジアの人々の望む平和と民主への思いを今後も取材していきたいと思います。
