"The Indomitable Spirit of the Cambodian Resistance" is Satoshi Takahashi's third photo book published by Japanese newspaper The Akita Sakigake Shimpo in 2018.
This photo book is a compilation of his work in Cambodia from 2013 to 2018, covering the social movements to struggle against the autocratic government. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen seized power for 38 years beginning in 1985 and handed over power to his eldest son in 2023. His rule has relied on security force violence and politically motivated persecution of opposition members, human rights defenders, and journalists. This book depicted the courage of the "Cambodian Resistance" who fought the dictatorship for democracy.
In March 2019, this book won the 38th "Domon Ken Award". This award is one of the most celebrated documentary photography awards in Japan, and the book was featured as a permanent collection of the Ken Domon Museum of Photography in Yamagata Prefecture. And also, the book received several international photography awards, including the "Gold Award" in Book/Documentary category of The Prix de la Photographie, Paris (PX3), "Honorable Mention" in Book/Documentary category of International Photography Awards (IPA), "Bronze Award" in Book/Documentary category of Budapest International Foto Awards (BIFA) and "Honorable Mention" in Book/Documentary category of Moscow International Foto Awards (MIFA).
I put my own shadow on the last photo in this book, along with the people, because I wanted to express this feeling in the last photograph. "I want to continue to be with their indomitable spirit."
I dedicate this book to the Cambodian Resistance.
近年のカンボジア取材の集大成として出版をしていただいた写真集『RESISTANCE カンボジア 屈せざる人々の願い』。独裁と弾圧を強めるフン・セン政権に対し、自由と民主を求めて立ち向かったカンボジアの人々の尊い姿を、全身全霊をかけて取材した内容となっている。
この写真集は、国内最高峰の写真賞の一つであり、写真界の直木賞と形容されている『土門拳賞』を受賞した。また、複数の国際写真賞も受賞し、『The Prix de la Photographie, Paris (フランス) 』のプロの部・ドキュメンタリー写真集カテゴリーで『Gold』(金賞)、『International Photography Awards (アメリカ)』のプロの部・ドキュメンタリー写真集カテゴリーで『Honorable Mention』(奨励賞)、『Budapest International Foto Awards (ハンガリー)』のプロの部・ドキュメンタリー写真集カテゴリーで『Bronze』(銅賞)、『Moscow International Foto Awards (ロシア)』のプロの部・ドキュメンタリー写真集カテゴリーで『Honorable Mention』(奨励賞)を受賞した。
写真集の最後に掲載した一枚には、屈せざる願いで闘い続けたカンボジアの人々の姿に、私の影も投影した。「どんな時も、離れていても、いつも私は皆の願いと一緒にいる」。その思いを写真に込めた。
私はこの写真集を、圧政と闘う全てのカンボジアの人々に捧げたい。
