My work has been featured in a Japanese newspaper, The Mainichi Shimbun. This article focuses on the story of a pear farmer who produces a specialty of the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture known as "Oga Pear" and describes the traditional activities that have been handed down in the Chuishi area.
毎日新聞夕刊の写真特集紙面『eye』に、昨年の晩夏から取材を重ねている秋田県男鹿半島中石地区の取材記事を写真7枚と約千字で掲載いただきました。中石地区は北東北最大の和梨生産地。中石の土壌が育む各種の和梨は『男鹿梨』と呼ばれ、男鹿半島を象徴する特産品の一つになっています。その一方で、「地区から子どもの声が消えた。寂しい現実です」と、地区の住職が語るように少子高齢化が進み、後継者の確保が重要な課題となっています。 実りの秋。吹雪の中での剪定作業。200年間受け継がれてきた春彼岸行事の百万遍念仏。そして伝統のナマハゲ行事。課題と向き合いながら、民俗息づく『男鹿梨の里』に生きる人々を見つめた記録です。本日の紙面をご覧いただけますと幸いです。 私の取材を受け入れていただいた中石地区の皆様と、いつも背中を温かく押してくれるeye担当の皆様に感謝いたします。

Oga Peninsula, Akita Prefecture, Japan -20/03/2025: The Hyakumanben Nembutsu, a traditional event handed down for more than 200 years, was held at a temple in the Chuishi area. The local people sat in a circle and chanted Buddhist prayers while spinning large prayer beads, about 6 meters long, to drive away bad luck before spring arrived. The event, which has been suspended since 2017 due to an ageing population and the impact of COVID-19, was held on this day for the first time in eight years. 200年以上受け継がれてきた春彼岸の伝統行事「百万遍念仏」が、同地区の「洞昌寺」で行われた。人々は約6メートルの大数珠を、車座になって回しながら念仏を唱え続けた。厄難退散を願ういにしえの旋律は、数珠の玉がぶつかり合う独特の音に調和し、人々を祈りの境地へいざなっていった。高齢化とコロナ禍による中断を経て8年ぶりの開催だった。秋田県男鹿半島中石地区。2025年3月20日。
