I have been contacted by the newly established international photojournalism award, the Photojournalism Prize (PJP), to inform me that my photo story, Khmer People Affected by the Border Conflict, which covers the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, has been shortlisted. The final results are due to be announced on 15 June. The judging panel comprises leading figures from the international photography community. Throughout history, the Cambodian people have suffered the full brunt of war's cruelty. Seeing them driven from their homes once again, losing their lives to the conflict and becoming refugees was utterly unbearable. “We Cambodians do not want war.” I wish to continue conveying this message.

◇The story describes the five-day border conflict that occurred at the end of July last year, which marked the first major outbreak of hostilities. It does not include details of the large-scale clashes that erupted again in December.

新たに創設されたフォトジャーナリズムの国際写真賞『PHOTOJOURNALISM PRIZE（PJP）』から連絡があり、タイとカンボジアの国境紛争を取材したフォトストーリー『Khmer People Affected by the Border Conflict』が最終候補作品に選出されました。PJPは、ロン・ハビブ、ジェームズ・ナクトウェイ、スティーブ・マッカリーをはじめとした著名なフォトジャーナリストやガーディアン紙のフォトエディターなど様々な写真関係者が審査委員を務めています。 総合結果の発表は6月15日となるようです。 戦争の残酷さを経験し尽くしてきたカンボジアの人々。彼らが再び家を追われ、紛争によって命を落とし、避難民となってしまう姿は余りにも耐え難い状況でした。「我々カンボジア人は戦争は望まない」。その願いをこれからも伝え続けていきたいと思います。そして、避難民キャンプで今も暮らさざるを得ない人々への支援ができないかと考えています。

◇ストーリーの説明文は最初の大規模衝突となった昨年7月末の5日間の国境紛争の内容となります。12月に再度勃発した衝突の内容は含んでおりません。
