I'm honored that one of my photographs documenting the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia won the Gold Award (first place) in the Photojournalism category of the Professional Division at the '1839 Awards', an international photography competition held in the United States. I will never forget the image of that elderly woman who lost her life in the refugee camp. When I saw her, I felt the sadness of war.

Throughout history, the people of Cambodia have endured the tragedies of war time and again. Watching them being driven from their homes once again, losing their lives to the conflict and being forced to become refugees was utterly unbearable. 'We Cambodians do not want war.' It is a message that I wish to continue conveying.

The year '1839' marks a significant milestone in the history of photography. On 19 August 1839, the 'Daguerreotype', the world's first practical photographic process was unveiled in Paris, and this event inspired the name of the award.

ファイナリストに選出されていたアメリカの国際写真賞『1839 AWARDS 』。私の作品は最終審査の結果、プロの部、フォトジャーナリズムカテゴリーの中で第1位（Gold Award）に決定したと連絡がありました。国境紛争に巻き込まれ、難民キャンプに避難せざるを得なかったご高齢のメアス・スーンさん。過酷な避難生活で体調を崩し、難民キャンプの診療所で治療を受けていました。しかし急激に体調が悪化し、医師は懸命な処置を施しましたがスーンさんは亡くなりました。ポル・ポト政権の虐殺と内戦を生き延びたスーンさんが再び戦火に巻き込まれ命を落とす現実は、戦争の不条理を突き付けられた時間でした。彼女の姿を決して忘れず、カンボジアの人々の望む平和と民主への思いを今後も取材していきたいと思います。 スーンさんのお姿は今後、欧米の新聞社や写真関連の複数メディアに掲載されるチャンスがあるようです。「我々カンボジア人は戦争を望まない」。カンボジアの人々が託してくれたその願いを少しでも世界に届ける機会になればと思います。

1839年は写真界にとっての記念すべき年で、世界初の実用的な写真技法『ダゲレオタイプ』がパリで発表されました。写真賞の名前の由来となっています。
