13 years ago, 26 April 2012. Prominent Cambodian environmental activist Chut Wutty was shot dead by military police while investigating illegal logging in the forests of Koh Kong province in south-west Cambodia. Illegal logging in Cambodia was allegedly linked to military and regime corruption, and Mr Wutty continued to fight against injustice in order to protect his country's natural resources. Since 2003, when I began reporting on Cambodia, several prominent activists, including Mr Wutty, have been killed or assassinated. Each of them had noble aspirations, courage and a desire for a just society. Their families and supporters continue to call for an investigation into the truth, but the regime denies any re-investigation, claiming that the matter has been resolved.

13年前の2012年4月26日。カンボジアの著名な環境保護活動家Chut Wutty氏が、カンボジア南西部のコッコン州の森の中で違法森林伐採の調査中に軍属による銃撃を受け、殺害された。2017年9月に、政権によるメディア弾圧の末に廃刊に追い込まれることになる内戦後初の日刊英字紙カンボジア・デイリー所属の記者の取材に、Wutty氏は当時同行していた。カンボジアの違法森林伐採は、軍や政権の腐敗が関与しているとされ、Wutty氏は祖国の自然資源を守るために、その不正と闘い続けていた。度重なる脅迫と暴力的な弾圧を受けながらも、屈せず活動を続ける彼の姿は多くの支持者を生み、尊敬を集めていた。私がカンボジアで取材を開始した2003年以降、Wutty氏を含めた複数の著名な活動家が殺害、暗殺された。その一人一人が、崇高な志と勇気を持ち、公正な社会を求めていた。彼らの遺族と支持者は、真相究明を今も訴え続けているが、政権は解決済みとして再調査を否定している。
